Online Marketing Strategy: Got Your Cart Before The Horse?

online marketing strategyWhat do all these questions have in common?

  • If I start a business, how will I market it?
  • If I write a book, who will publish it?
  • If I win the lottery, how will I protect my winnings?

They’ve all got the cart before the horse! You don’t need to spend money and effort on marketing until you have something to sell. You don’t need a publisher until you’ve written the book, and you don’t need to worry about what to do with those lottery winnings until you’ve won.

Yes, it pays to give thought to these things. It is smart to decide if there is a market for what you intend to sell, but I see most people letting these questions immobilize them.

In working with start-up entrepreneurs, I’ve noticed many of them obsess over marketing and how they will get customers before they are ready to do so. They are so stumped by how they’ll get customers, that many never get started.

Others get in such a big hurry to acquire customers that they don’t prepare to receive them. I’ve been in online marketing and advertising since 1994, and the biggest mistake I see people make is paying for advertising and marketing without having a clear way for people to get on their lists or purchase from them. I actually turn down Facebook ad management clients if they do not have those things in place.

Imagine a store running advertisements when they have no products on the shelves. Seems silly, but people do it all the time online. I can’t tell you how many people who consider themselves coaches and consultants and they have no email follow up system and no buy buttons on their web sites.

As one of my colleagues, Laura West said,

I see a lot of people falling in love with marketing strategies without having a product, program, membership or a list. I’ve heard stories of people being on huge shows like Dr. Phil or Oprah as an expert…and no mechanisms in place to capture people on their list. Wasted opportunity!”

Online Marketing Strategy

Here are the steps in the right order:

  1. Research the market you’d like to serve. Is the market big enough for what you intend to offer? Are they reachable? Do you know what their most pressing problems are? Do you know what they need and what they’re willing to pay for?
  2. Acquire or create products and services that serve that market and meet their most pressing needs.
  3. Create the systems (web site/ecommerce, product funnel, marketing funnel) that guide people through purchasing your products and services.
  4. Do the actual marketing and advertising to drive people to your marketing funnel.

Create Information Products: Leverage Your Wisdom-Serve More People

  • Are you ready to stop trading hours for dollars?
  • Would you like to create more revenue streams without taking personal time away from your family?
  • Would you like to reach more people with your work and your message?
  • Would you like to help more people with what you do best?

Information products and online training programs are a great way to do all of these. Downloadable information products can bring much needed cashflow into your business while you sleep or vacation.

Busting A Couple Myths About Information Product Creation

Myth 1: Most people assume creating an information product or program has to take a long time. It doesn’t. Not if you have a system for creating it.

Myth 2: A lot of people also assume an information product wouldn’t fit well with their business. Even businesses built around physical products (like essential oils, clothing, makeup, extermination services) can all benefit from information products.

Myth 3: Many feel like they aren’t an expert in anything and that no one would pay for an information product they would create. You’d be surprised at what people will pay to learn.

In my Free Training Series, “Is There An Information Product In You?” I share ideas for determining if creating an information product is a good route for you. (You can get this free tutorial using the signup form on this page.)

If you’re not sure if you are ready to create an information product, here are a few questions to help you determine if you’re ready to leverage your knowledge or life lessons into programs and products.

Consider These Questions

create information products1) “I help people solve what problem?” What problem do people struggle with that you can solve? You may help people solve multiple problems, but could you pick one?

2) “Who do I help?” Describe this person in as much detail as you can.

3) “I help them by teaching them what?” Could you break it down into three steps or points?

4) “And here are the results they get…” What kind of results do people get from working with you?

5) Name 1-3 people you have helped who have received positive results from working with you.

If you can answer those questions, you’re ready for my system of creating products in a week or less.

If you can’t answer those questions, here’s a little homework you can do to get ready to leverage your influence through my duplicatable product creation system.

1) Start a Focus Group – think of 2-5 people who fit the audience you’d like to work with.

2) Take Your Focus Group through the Process – Invite the list of people to participate in your training. You might put them in a group and help them together in 1-3 phone calls. If you’d rather, you can work with them one-on-one. It doesn’t have to be as a group format. Offer participants your training in exchange for them giving you feedback and testimonials (assuming they benefit from working with you).

3) Give participants an assessment before you work with them. This is as simple as several questions asking them to rate themselves on a scale of 1-5 in different areas that relate to the problem you intend to solve.

4) Give participants the same assessment again at the end of the training to see how they improved.

5) Document the process. Record your calls. Hang onto any handouts or items you create for them.

6) Ask for testimonials.

Now you have a process. You know whether it works and you hopefully have some glowing testimonials you can use.

Once you’ve done this (or something similar to it), you’re ready to offer training programs that can be resold as a product. To learn more about my free tutorial on preparing to create information products, go here.

LDS temples

How to Accomplish Big Things

Want to know how to accomplish big things? Here’s a lesson from history on how…

Whether you’re LDS or not you probably have seen one of their 155 temples. “The Mormons” are known for their gorgeous temples. But do you know the story of the first one?

Back in the 1830s God told Joseph Smith to build a temple. Joseph shared this with the people. They owned a piece of land in Kirtland, OH they would use. Three months came and went with no work on the temple. And the Lord started to chastise Joseph for not acting on this project.

When I read this I thought. “That’s a huge undertaking for a small new denomination. They didn’t even know what it really was for or what it was supposed to look like. You’d think God would cut them some slack. Give them more information.”

Have you ever felt God tell you to do something that seemed huge? So you waited for more instruction but all you got in time was a feeling of “why haven’t you done anything with what I told you to do?”

When the Lord sort of fussed at Joseph and the people about this, Joseph’s brother Hyrum Smith went out to the property and started digging. He had no idea what the thing was supposed to look like, but he knew it needed a foundation. So he started digging that.

accomplish big thingsOnce Hyrum started digging, God sent a revelation to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery of what the temple should look like. They saw a full holographic image over their heads. They saw the dimensions, the completed exterior and interior.

But the details weren’t revealed until Hyrum did the only thing he knew to do — dig.

What is the first baby step you know to take toward your big dream? Or big project? The secret to making big things happen is to stop concerning yourself with all the steps you don’t know yet, and focus on the one right in front of you.

It’s been my experience that once you take that step, the next will reveal itself. Do the next, and the next will follow. “Line upon line, precept upon precept.” This is how God instructs you to build big things.

new year's theme

New Year’s Theme: Selecting a Theme for 2017

Each New Year, I don’t create resolutions. I select a New Year’s theme. I normally select a New Year’s theme based on an idea that strikes me… generally something to support my goals. But this year, nothing was coming, so I decided to approach my theme selection from a different angle.

Back in 2012, a good friend taught me about the 9 year cycles we go through in our lives. Each year has a specific purpose in our development, and we cycle through these 9 years from a fresh start in a year 1 to a point of completion in a 9 year.

I’m heading into a 7 personal year which is all about planning, self-discovery, and diving deeper within. Generally, it’s not a year of making great strides in the physical world, but more exploring the depths of your inner world. It’s preparation for the 8 year which is about abundance, magnification and going big. If I do my inner work of the 7 year right, I should be ready to roll with big things in 2018.

This fits with how I’ve been feeling … that there is a “big idea” out there for me but not yet. There is preparation to do … something to learn and or be clarified first.

As far as goals go…

I’m currently writing my Restoring Liberty book and hope to release it this year. That’s not necessarily any “big thing” for me. I’ve written over 25 books. Writing a book is my norm. The only thing big about it is that it aligns with my mission. I believe I’m here to stand for freedom and to educate people around freedom. I honestly don’t anticipate that the book will be a big best seller. It’s more for me — fine tuning my ability to articulate the principles of freedom.

I’d really like to write a fantasy novel or some kind of fiction novel around the principles next.  I anticipate that will start to take shape in my mind as I come to the end of my 7 year (2017). It should come out in 2018… or at least get written then. That’s my guess anyway. It’s percolating at a conceptual level — not at a story line level really. I’ve had some thoughts, but nothing that propels me forward.

Looking Back on Where I’ve Been

A 7 year is about taking things easy, working on your inner game. I’ve shifted dramatically in the last 3 years. I put my systems in place in 2014 (year 4), headed into a roller coaster adventure year traveling and exploring my freedom in 2015 (year 5), and settled into creating a new home life in 2016 (year 6).

I’m not the same person I was. Adventurous, roller coaster 2015 took me to some lost places, but somehow God reached down, snatched me up, and put me on a better path.

I feel different. I’m not certain the spiritual trail I followed pre-2015 works for me anymore. Maybe I had started to form wrong perceptions of the spiritual world. I don’t know. I just know I’m skeptical of a lot of the things I used to buy into. I’ve gone through a major reboot, and I feel like God wants me to adjust my spiritual perspectives.

Even though I don’t feel as “on my spiritual game” as I was prior to 2015, there are some good things that have come with the spiritual reboot of that year. I’m not as black and white about things. But the more I keep going to church, keep studying, and keep teaching at church, the more I feel the Spirit tuning my spirit to its frequency.

Tears come more readily than they used to. I rarely, if ever, cried — even when I needed to. I’m more compassionate, less judgmental, more forgiving, more willing to give people room to make mistakes and grow. More patient with people’s progress and my own.

Selecting a New Year’s Theme

Setting the numbers aside, even if I wasn’t in a “let it be” 7 year, I don’t feel like being pushed. I’m not feeling ambitious and don’t feel the need to force myself to be so.

I’ve been in observation mode with my own spirituality since 2015. I’ve observed how the Spirit has been shaping me, changing me. In a very subtle, gentle way the Spirit has been tweaking my desires so that I have less desire for sin, more desire for good. It’s been a very organic process. I have not had to “pull myself up by my bootstraps and make myself be good.”

This is why I believe the primary thing I need in 2017 is the Spirit.

Every small interaction with the Spirit adds a drop of oil to my lamp so I can shine brighter.

  • It cleanses and purifies me just a little bit more,
  • Aligns my desires and will with God’s will,
  • Clarifies my purpose and life mission,
  • Liberates me from internal and external bondage,
  • Teaches me who I am,
  • Helps me feel the love of God,
  • Enables me to love others more,
  • Brings me joy, peace, hope and faith, and
  • Propels me to act when the timing and ideas are right.

Degree by degree with every encounter, the Spirit transforms me. It’s not a “muster the willpower” to be more, better or greater.  Seeking the Spirit daily facilitates a kind, gentle, and organic transformation which is in alignment with a 7 year.

So, my theme for this year is simple:

Experience the Spirit Daily

That’s it. I can do that by watching inspirational materials, reading scriptures, listening to uplifting music, reading inspirational books and articles, journaling, studying, sharing/teaching what I’m learning.

Plan to Feel the Spirit More

As far as my business goes, I’m calendaring my year with my key offerings, and then I’m developing a daily action plan for marketing those offerings. Each day I’ll know what I’m supposed to be doing. By knowing what I need to do each day for my business, I can save lots of indecision and floundering time, get the job done, and then have the rest of the time for experiencing the Spirit and following what it guides me to do.

That’s what I’m working on this week — planning my year and creating my marketing calendar. I’ll be sharing how I do this in my next Marnie’s Marketing Mondays if you’d like to join me.

validate yourself

Validate Yourself: Stop Waiting for Someone Else to Do It

I think many of us are waiting for someone else to validate us, to make us feel like we hold value. I’ve spent most of my life waiting for someone else to see all the aspects of me and appreciate me for everything I am.

Probably only a handful of people (including my parents) have come close to seeing all of me and valuing and loving me unconditionally. I am immensely grateful for them.

Throughout my life I’ve gotten aggravated that significant others weren’t seeing the full real me. But the truth is, I wasn’t fully honoring, acknowledging, valuing or respecting myself. It finally dawned on me that I needed to stop waiting for someone else to validate me.

I was the one discounting my gifts. I was the one assuming that things that come easily to me come easily for everyone. They don’t. I wasn’t seeing, acknowledging or honoring my giving, loving heart or my kindness. I wasn’t honoring my compassion, resiliency or wisdom.

I assumed everyone is wired like me. And they aren’t. I have gifts, qualities, and inner strengths that are unique to me. They are important. They contribute to the world and enrich the lives of the people around me.

The shift came when I stopped blaming men, clients or the world for not taking the time to really know or value me. I had to stop playing the victim and own my role. There was only one person to blame and that was me. I was the one who didn’t step up for me. I was the one who hadn’t given me the validation I deserved. I’ve always been able to see the greatness in others, why wouldn’t I see it in myself?

It’s extremely liberating to realize you don’t need someone else to come along and validate you. How could anyone else truly value me and my qualities if I don’t value myself?

What about you? Have you ever taken the time to stop and celebrate your accomplishments, acknowledge the hard things you’ve been through and risen above? Have you itemized your good qualities? Have you witnessed and documented your own character growth?

A little bit of journaling on this could shift everything for you. I highly recommend it. Within your story, within your greatness you may also find that you have something priceless to share.

Affirmations: Validate Yourself

  • I see and embrace my own infinite worth.
  • I value myself.
  • I let go of waiting for other people to validate me.
  • I validate myself.
  • I see, acknowledge and appreciate my talents, gifts, abilities, temperament, personality, and strengths.
  • I am compassionate with myself.
  • I acknowledge the difficulties I’ve endured and the growth I’ve made.
  • I celebrate my successes and I see my own character development over time.
  • I forgive myself for what I perceive as past mistakes.
  • I trust myself to move forward in positive and ever-improving ways.

personal responsibility

Personal Responsibility Is the Key to Peace

When you stand before your Maker, He won’t ask you what your race did, what your gender did, or what your religion did. He will ask you how you lived YOUR life. Were you loving? How did YOU treat people? You’ll have to take personal responsibility for your own actions.

Society has misdiagnosed the problem as class, race, gender or religion-based. The problem isn’t with factions or classes. The problem is with individuals who are abdicating their personal responsibility to factions, classes, nations, government.

As long as we keep lumping each other into groups by ethnicity, gender or other factors, we’ll keep pitting one group against another. We’re creating resentment followed by hatred, and violence.

Some individuals are cruel to others. Some would be cruel to their own grandmothers. Other individuals of any slice or segment are the kindest most loving souls out there. Most of us fall somewhere between the spectrum.

We are individuals, not groups. Don’t judge me in a group. That just makes me irritated. THAT is what is truly divisive. Millions of people who have been lumped into various groups are getting blamed for the actions of the few in those groups who fall into the cruel side of the spectrum.

And what happens when you’re unjustly accused? Most of us feel resentment and as if we’re being victimized. After all, WE have done nothing. Why is that group over there blaming us for their problems?

The root problem is our society likes to make people responsible at a group level and not at an individual level. Divide and conquer. True freedom, peace and harmony comes only when each person takes INDIVIDUAL responsibility for themselves.

I am not guilty of your sins and you aren’t guilty of mine. And neither of us are guilty of a groups’.

The Only Solution

The only solution is to help as many people truly get that they are children of a Divine Creator, and we are responsible to Him for our own choices. When we truly get that, we realize our neighbor is also a child of God — our brother, our sister — FAMILY!

We are responsible for the amount of love we reflect in the world. No one can force us to be loving. You can’t legislate kindness or love (contrary to what the government-must-fix-it-all philosophy says ).

The only way to create kindness is with kindness. Kindness and love breed kindness and love. Be the love and your world becomes loving.

“Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.”

way forward

A Way Forward For All

The longer you live in victim land the more entitled you feel. The more entitled you feel, the less personal responsibility you take. Where there is no personal responsibility there can be no freedom.

And thus, victim land equals slavery… To your fears, your lack of action, your lack of looking for solutions, and to those who wish to keep you a victim so they might enslave you. The only way to freedom is through personal responsibility.

Always beware of those who want you to continue to feel you are a victim. They generally have another agenda than your happiness.

Here are a few affirmations to help you release any victim energy. I believe if we could all release our victim energy we could move forward positively as citizens of this great land and harness the freedom it affords.

  • I act from a place of personal power and positive choices.
  • I have excellent discernment and easily distinguish truth from deception.
  • I have a strong connection to God, truth, light, and love.
  • I am self-reliant, resourceful and proactive.
  • I take personal responsibility for my own actions (or inaction) and avoid blaming others for my outcomes.
  • I see opportunities and get to work in implementing my ideas.
  • I am always supported in my worthwhile ideas, projects and pursuits.
  • I let go of any feelings of persecution.
  • I look for ways to attract positive, supportive people into my life.
  • I look for the good in any and all situations.
  • I give people the benefit of the doubt and look for the good in others.
  • I let go of worrying or concerning myself over what other people think of me.
  • I constantly attract people to me who value me and treat me fairly.
  • I treat others with respect and kindness and attract people who treat me the same.
  • I am open to, see and act upon the positive opportunities all around me.
  • I let go of obsessing over what I have perceived as grievances or lost opportunities.
  • I release from the timeline of my life any and all victim energy.
  • I stand confidently in my own personal power and am impervious to anything negative from the outside world.
  • I can achieve anything I set my mind to.
  • I set clear intentions and doors open for me.
  • I am always guided by the light and am under God's protective wings

power of mothers

Power of Mothers: Why Liberals Want Mothers In The Worforce

There’s this article going around that says Joe Biden blamed the economy on “Lazy American Women” who won’t work. It had a bunch of derogatory statements about women who stay home in it. When I first saw it I was enraged that he was demeaning the power of mothers.

But then I realized it was a bit over the top. Nobody in his right mind would say such nonsense. So I dug deeper. I can’t find anything to corroborate the article. But I found some of the phraseology in another article and found where the original speech was given in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Oct 25, 2016. It’s on Youtube (I’ve included it below this post).

Around 26-27 minutes into the speech he says that the economy could be fixed by putting women back to work and that women stay home because of the expense of childcare. So if the government subsidized childcare, more women could work and the gov’t would create all this extra revenue.

Ok, I still have a problem with what he ACTUALLY said. Many women WANT to stay home with their kids and they CAN’T because it’s next-to-impossible for families to exist on one income.

Our grandparents could do it, our parents could do it, but we can’t. So his logic is faulty. The REAL issue is that there was no redistribution of wealth until the late 1930’s and it didn’t become incredibly prevalent until the last 30-40 years.

The REAL underlying message is that politicians want to take your children cradle-to-grave and put moms to work as slaves to cover government politician’s spending sprees.

They blow more money than American families can keep up with, so they say, “Let’s take the kids and then put the mothers to work so they can pay more taxes to us. And with two parents working, that will kick families into a higher tax bracket where we can take more of what they earn.”

“We also get the added bonus of control and power because everyone knows “the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world” and we want to rule the world…

Politicians: “Mirror, mirror, on the wall… who has the most power of them all?”
Mirror: “Mothers…”
Politicians: “Okay, better destroy those mothers! Or at least keep them from rocking the cradle.”

take a stand

Let’s Take a Stand: What I Stand For

Many times we speak in terms of what we don’t want or what we’d like to prevent. Today I’d like to talk about what I take a stand FOR.

  • I am FOR your right to keep the money you earn.
  • I am FOR your right to be charitable or not.
  • I am FOR your right to think, feel, believe, worship and speak as you wish.
  • I am FOR your right to hate, dislike or disagree with me in your thoughts, words, beliefs or tune out anything I say.
  • I am FOR freedom and FOR each individual taking responsibility for his or her own actions and the consequences thereof.
  • I am FOR punishment being affixed to ACTIONS that have taken life, property or freedom from another…. And clearly distinguish thoughts, feelings, beliefs and words from ACTIONS.
  • I am FOR your right to bear arms and to defend yourself against harm.
  • I am FOR maintaining and defending the U.S. Constitution.
  • I am FOR keeping our oaths and covenants we’ve made with God and men.
  • I am FOR small businesses, industry, resourcefulness and self-sufficiency.
  • I am FOR your right to do business with whomever you wish or not do business with whomever you wish.
  • I am FOR your right to worship as you see fit.
  • I am FOR anything that protects and defends life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
  • I am FOR standing by the country, for defending, protecting and honoring the land in which you reside and the people who populate your country.
  • I am FOR living in a sovereign nation that puts its own citizens and their protection first.
  • I am FOR the unborn and I am FOR defending future generations – their lives, their property, their liberty and FOR leaving them a legacy of faith, independence and prosperity.
  • I am FOR honoring, respecting and compensating those who risk their lives to defend our lives, liberty and property.
  • I am FOR those who have invested their hard earned dollars in Social Security to receive their own with generous interest.
  • I am FOR limited government, more personal responsibility and with God’s help a better world.

In standing FOR these things for you, I stand FOR them for myself and my family as well.
