release perfectionism

Release Perfectionism: God Uses The Willing Not The Perfect

When I’m prone to feel I or someone else is too imperfect or has too many problems to be of any use to God, I’m going to remind myself to release perfectionism because God uses the willing, not the perfect:

  • Noah got downright naked drunk.
  • Abram got afraid and lied.
  • Even “perfect” Job feared.
  • Sara got impatient.
  • Jacob lied and stole.
  • Rebecca deceived her own husband.
  • Joseph was spoiled and a bit full of himself.
  • Moses could be hot-tempered.
  • Rahab was a harlot.
  • Gideon could be skeptical and a sign-seeker.
  • Samson slept with a woman he wasn’t married to.
  • King Saul had narcissistic and probably paranoid schizophrenic tendencies. He also tried to kill David.
  • David committed adultery and had an innocent man killed.
  • Bathsheba committed adultery.
  • Elijah got depressed and wanted to die.
  • Nebuchadnezzar was a narcissist and battled mental illness.
  • Peter got scared, swore and lied.
  • Saul (later Paul) stood by and held the cloaks of people while they stoned innocent Stephen.
  • Mary Magdellan had 7 devils cast out of her.
  • Matthew was a tax collector.
  • John and James fought over who would have more power.

You know what? God used every last one of them. I don’t know about you, but that gives me a lot of hope for myself and others.

As my friend Martina M Muir says, “Who you are is not what you’ve done.”

climbing mountains

Climbing Mountains & Taking Leaps of Faith

climbing mountainsHave you enjoyed the vistas of a breathtaking spiritual mountaintop? And after some time there, felt inspired to do something equivalent to diving off a cliff?

In faith, you leaped. You expected to sprout wings, but they didn’t extend… At least not enough to keep you from flailing about, struggling, crying and landing in an excruciating heap.

As you lie splattered on the earth, crushed and battered, you question what you heard and the choices you made. Maybe you even got frustrated, confused about, or downright mad at God.

Why in the WORLD would He tell you to do that? Maybe He didn’t and you were drinking some weird Koolaide.

Eventually, you make your peace with Him and with yourself. You nurse your wounds for a spell and life starts to reboot. You can breath again and your soul starts to heal. It’s not painful anymore when you move.

You even see some reason for it all, perhaps some method in the madness. You even see it has all worked together for your good.

At this point the Spirit whispers, “I have another mountain for you to climb.”

Wide-eyed you reply, “Are you bonkers? I’ll sit here where it’s safe and warm, thank you very much.”

“It’s time to relight your fire,” that still, small voice whispers.

“Who needs fire? I’ll just stay here lukewarm and safe,” you insist.

But the longer you stay in this comfortable place, the more you know that you were never meant to play it safe on the ground. You were meant to climb, reach breathtaking vistas, and yes, most likely free fall and soar.

“Sigh… Here we go again. Which mountain, Lord?”

“Patience, child. Let’s prep for the trip…”

Pray for America at 9pm

A Prayer for America

Every night at 9pm I say a prayer for America. Will you join me in this habit of praying at 9pm for our country? My prayer this evening to our Father in Heaven is that…

God will heal our hearts and our land.

That we will awaken to a sense of our awful situation and turn to God for direction, for wisdom, for common sense, for true hope, and a bright future for our children and grandchildren.

That those who have been reared in chaos, violence, and poverty, who feel they have nothing to lose, will find mentors and guides to lift them from their situation and know that their lives do matter.

They do not have to live in these awful conditions. Help them to know peace, productivity and purpose.

Guide good people to them to love, mentor and light the way for them.

Pour out your protection on our law enforcement and military who risk their lives to protect the rest of us. Send angels round about them to bear them up and keep them safe. Give them wisdom and understanding to make wise split-second choices in difficult situations.

Give hope to the hopeless, sight to the blind. Help the deaf to hear Your voice and those who walk in darkness to finally see the light.

Open our eyes that we may see each other through YOUR eyes and witness the divine in each other.

Protect the pure in heart, those who are striving to be kind to their fellowman. Protect those who have a desire to lift our people and make the world a better place.

Remove from public office those who would destroy and degrade our country. Replace them with good, honest people who will seek to uphold their oaths of office.

Lord, only YOU see the thoughts and intents of the heart. You be the judge. We release judgement of any and all, knowing we ourselves are not blameless of our own faults. Vengeance is thine, we step out of the way and allow You to repay.

Show mercy to those who are lost and confused, for we too have been lost and confused and have felt Your mercy.

Forgive those who have caused or seek to cause harm to those we love; for we know that we too need Your forgiveness.

Please hear the prayers and the cries of those of us who put our trust in You, Father. In the name of Your precious, perfect Son, Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.

Solving Society's Problems

Society’s Solution: Get To the Root Cause

Everybody’s wondering how to find solutions to society’s problems. But you can’t effectively treat an illness by treating symptoms. You must know and treat the root cause.

If someone comes to me who is struggling in some aspect of their life or business, I immediately try to find the root cause. This could be a belief, idea or habit (usually caused by trauma or conditioning) that is rippling out into the person’s actions and is producing the symptomatic problems.

As I have observed and ferreted through society’s disturbing symptoms of terror, hate, anger, murder and depravity, I have followed the trail back to one root cause.

No One Else Is Talking About This (That I Know Of)

I’ve seen lots of opinions offered, but I haven’t seen anyone else hit upon this one. Hate has been mentioned, but what is at the root of hate? You have to dig deeper than hate. Hate is a symptom of a root cause. You, see if you are suffering from a bad enough case of this root cause, you HAVE to hate anyone who doesn’t agree with you… but I’ll get to why that is in a moment.

I’d like to add, there’s no pointing fingers here. I’ve experienced this ugly root cause as well. None of us is fully immune to the malady that ails us.

So What Is the Root Cause?

In a word: Idolatry. That’s an Old Testament word most of us think was reserved for past generations who worshiped wood and stone idols. Surely, modern society is too sophisticated for that. But, hear me out.

People invent their own ideological gods who will condone their own lusts and desires, making the activities and habits that grow from them acceptable.

Our gods morph to our imaginative indulgences and carnal depravity.

We govern our make-believe gods with relative standards. Whatever feels good, feeds our egos, or justifies our behavior is the god-condoned course.

Since our ideological gods are defenseless, they require defending. In actuality, their only substance is our own egos which makes defending them a first order of priority. Any attack against them is an attack against our egos. Defending these ego-driven gods includes:

  • condoning anger towards those who believe differently than we do,
  • hateful remarks,
  • lying to those who disagree with us,
  • hating, abusing or even killing those who do not conform to our ideological gods.
  • transforming the bloodthirst of mass murder into god-commanded behavior.

The Solution – Follow the True God

One day we will each come to the rude awakening that God is an actual being with a personality and an absolute identity who lives by a set of eternal absolute truths which lead to ultimate joy.

His unwavering adherence to eternal truths is perhaps the very reason He is God.

For us, living by those truths is rarely the easy or cushy path.

The true God’s path is a plan of ultimate happiness which requires

  • self-mastery,
  • discipline and
  • service.

But the rewards are great. A life of discipleship accesses an enabling power (aka grace) that changes our hearts. Grace eventually conquers our carnal desires until we have no more disposition to do evil but to do good continually. This means…

  • Out goes hate; in comes love.
  • Out goes revenge; in comes forgiveness.
  • Out goes misery; in comes joy.
  • Out goes death; in comes life.
  • Out goes slavery; in comes freedom.
  • Out goes destruction; in comes restoration.

gods of our imagination

The true God saves, loves, and heals those who come under His protective wings.

We access the power of His grace by

  • striving to truly know Him and
  • demonstrating our love for Him by keeping His commandments.

The gods of our imagination who condone our bad behavior and base passions are only illusions. They never had and never will have the power to save, heal, deliver or perfect us. Like dumb idols of stone and wood they stand idly by as we destroy ourselves.

Living in the light doesn't mean ignoring the darkness. (1)

Living in the Light Doesn’t Mean Ignoring the Darkness

A wise man gave me some advice when I was about 16-17 years old. “Continue to look for the good,” he said. I have tried to do that throughout my life – to look for the good in people, to give them the benefit of the doubt, to surround myself with things that are uplifting and inspirational and steer clear of things that are degrading or depressing.

I’ve enjoyed this somewhat naive way of living for fifty years, but every once in a while the darkness rears its head, gets up in my face, and I’m required to deal with it in the best way I know how. Sometimes the darkness and evil I see in the world doesn’t directly affect me, and I’ve had a tendency to just stick my head in a “love and light cloud” and ignore it.

Living In The LightBut is this really what I should be doing? Can I look for the good and still be aware of the evil? The older I get the more I feel compelled to expose the darkness when I see it. Many of us with this “love and light” philosophy would prefer to stick our heads in the sand and pretend the evil and darkness doesn’t exist. We think if we focus on the good long enough, the light will overcome and dispel the darkness.

There may be quite a bit of truth to that. But I don’t believe we’re doing ourselves or our children any service by not addressing what is wrong in our lives or in our world.

Dinosaurs in living rooms eventually make messes that must be cleaned up.

I was pondering on this compelling urge I have to “call a spade a spade” when I see it – to point out “when the emperor is indeed wearing no clothes.” Primarily, when I see freedom being attacked, I feel an intense need to speak up.

How do I balance pointing out the bad with looking for the good and staying in the light?

This morning while asking myself this very question, I recalled a passage from the Doctrine and Covenants about how early members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were advised to address the plunder, rape, murder and persecution heaped upon them in the 1800’s. They were told to document EVERYTHING that was done to them. Every injustice was to be documented and carried to the government leaders of the time. Then, this is what they were supposed to do next…

“And also it is an imperative duty that we owe to all the rising generation, and to all the pure in heart—

Therefore, that we should waste and wear out our lives in bringing to light all the hidden things of darkness, wherein we know them; and they are truly manifest from heaven—

These should then be attended to with great earnestness. Let no man count them as small things;

Therefore, dearly beloved brethren, let us cheerfully do all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed.” (D&C 123:11,13-15, 17)

Cheerfully Do All Things That Lie In Our Power

Notice that phrase, “cheerfully do all things that lie in our power.” We don’t have to be fearful, sky-is-falling-fanatics. We don’t have to be angry, hateful or vindictive. Yet this instructional passage sounds like we can’t just sit back on our love and light cloud and pretend the evil is going to go away.

Here’s another example…

The Book of Mormon is a history of an ancient people who inhabited the Americas. Two prophets named Mormon and Moroni saw our day. Knowing the book would come forth in our modern era, they included stories that they felt would be applicable to us.

Moroni include a record of an ancient civilization called the Jaredites who were destroyed from within by a murderous “secret combination.” This secret combination infiltrated the Jaredite government and used secrecy to murder for power and gain. Here is the warning Moroni issued to us…

“Wherefore, O ye Gentiles (that’s us), it is wisdom in God that these things should be shown unto you, that thereby ye may repent of your sins, and suffer not that these murderous combinations shall get above you, which are built up to get power and gain—and the work, yea, even the work of destruction come upon you, yea, even the sword of the justice of the Eternal God shall fall upon you, to your overthrow and destruction if ye shall suffer these things to be.

Wherefore, the Lord commandeth you, when ye shall see these things come among you that ye shall awake to a sense of your awful situation, because of this secret combination which shall be among you; or wo be unto it, because of the blood of them who have been slain; for they cry from the dust for vengeance upon it, and also upon those who built it up.

For it cometh to pass that whoso buildeth it up seeketh to overthrow the freedom of all lands, nations, and countries; and it bringeth to pass the destruction of all people, for it is built up by the devil, who is the father of all lies; even that same liar who beguiled our first parents, yea, even that same liar who hath caused man to commit murder from the beginning; who hath hardened the hearts of men that they have murdered the prophets, and stoned them, and cast them out from the beginning.

Wherefore, I, Moroni, am commanded to write these things that evil may be done away, and that the time may come that Satan may have no power upon the hearts of the children of men, but that they may be persuaded to do good continually, that they may come unto the fountain of all righteousness and be saved. (Ether 8:23-26)

Awake to a Sense of your Awful Situation

It sounds to me like putting your head in the sand isn’t the way to go. It sounds like if we want evil to be done away, we need to “awaken to a sense of our awful situation” and see what’s “gotten above us” in our governments and in our leadership. We will recognize them by their agenda… “seeking to overthrow the freedom of all lands, nations, and countries and bringing to pass the destruction of all people.”

We can be cheerful as we do this. One might wonder how this is a cheerful task, but if we know we are standing in alignment with God, we can know that we are on the winning side. Because we know heavenly hosts are on our side we may “Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.” (2 Kings 6:16)

So, I will continue to look for the good and strive to stay in the light, but as I do this I will continue to call a spade a spade. I will continue to waste and wear out my life in bringing to light the hidden works of darkness as I see them. My hope is that we, as a nation, may awaken to a sense of our awful situation. I am not good with a sword or other weapons. I’ll leave that to my husband, but I am good with the pen. And I will use it as long as I am able.

What Individual Rights Really Mean

Have you noticed a quest to normalize every bizarre, sick behavior anyone might like to indulge in? Making huge hoopla and enacting regulations to protect whatever minuscule minority might initially like to engage in this behavior until curiosity seekers and social-hypochondriacs claim they too have a propensity for this popular “label”?

In my opinion, the agenda is to create more minorities. Minorities get special privileges and money in this country, if you hadn’t noticed. They also get to make everyone else walk around on eggshells.

Money and Power

Those who live for power and control now have their very own national playhouse of puppets. While we’re scurrying around adhering to mounds of nonsensical edicts and red tape to specially-service this now blown-way-out-of proportion-problem, their power is amassing for a time when it really matters.

“Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” (John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton, first Baron Acton (1834–1902).)

The truth is we all have weaknesses, quirks, and oddities. Part of life is learning to work around them.

I used to be terrified of driving next to semis. Perhaps I should have located more people with that phobia and requested bureaucrats decree laws to protect our rights. (The US decrees laws these days; there’s no time to deal with the messy process of passing them constitutionally.)

Perhaps I should insist the government create new highways for semis lest I be offended by a truck.  Or at the least, create special lanes for them lest my fear be activated.

Oh, but wait, that’s not necessary for me anymore because I took responsibility for my own feelings and did something to deal with them in a healthy way. I can drive in a swarm of semis and not feel the least rise in blood pressure anymore.

THAT’s the very thing nobody seems to want to do– allow personal responsibility to kick in and people take care of their own problems. Instead we’ve created a monstrous government that micromanages our lives and relationships ad nauseam.

Where will it end?

It probably won’t until they’re rearranging the nations bathrooms.  Oh wait… They’re already doing that.

Here’s what “they” don’t want you to know…

The longer you live in victim land the more entitled you feel. The more entitled you feel, the less personal responsibility you take. Where there is no personal responsibility there can be no freedom.

And thus, victim land equals slavery… To your fears, your lack of action, your lack of looking for solutions, and to those who wish to keep you a victim so they might enslave you. The only way to freedom is through personal responsibility.

Always beware of those who want you to continue to feel you are a victim. They generally have another agenda than your happiness.

imageDay by day the establishment is handing out packages with brightly colored “individual rights” ribbons and “freedom of choice” gift wrap.  For the naive it looks like a brightly wrapped solution when in reality it is labeling group after group as victims who are ENTITLED to special treatment.  Entitlement undermines personal responsibility.

You can have no freedom without personal responsibility. The two CANNOT be separated.

So the next time you see the government rallying around some new “individual rights” cause, look hard at what new victim mentality they are creating; and know that with every piece of personal responsibility they destroy, the more power they gain over your life.

Valuing What You Have to Offer the World

I have noticed that people with something important to share often do not value their own story or their message. They may feel as if there’s nothing new in what they’ve been through or they may not see that other people would care to hear what they have to say.

These can be core beliefs developed over a lifetime. Many individuals believe things like: “I’m not good enough” or “I don’t matter” or “I don’t have anything valuable to contribute.”

It’s amazing what happens when I show people how to systematically share what they know in a book or information productIt builds confidence and opens their eyes to what they have to offer.  Add in a little belief-shifting work to help them align their thoughts and beliefs about how valuable they are as a person, and things really shift.

As individuals come to value themselves, others value them and their work as well. As a person articulates and shares his or her message, he or she becomes the confident, transformational leader they are here to be and leaves a legacy of hope in the world.

And bottom line… that’s what we need in this world … more hope, more light, more inner peace and love toward ourselves and others.

I'm neither an ist nor a phobe. I'm just someone with values

Society’s New Unwritten Rule

The new unwritten law of society:

Political correctness and “tolerance” of every viewpoint, no matter how depraved it may be, is the new “self righteousness.” Popular opinion says that to be truly righteous one must accept every choice anyone wishes to make as completely acceptable and viable (except one later to be explained).

If you do not agree with a choice, if it violates your moral boundaries, and you speak out against the behavior, you have committed the unpardonable sin of “hate speech” or are possessed of some horrific phobia or are some kind of “ist.”

The concept of separating the action from the individual is considered impossible. One must not only allow everyone to choose to enact any violation against traditional Judaeo-Christian values, but also one must celebrate the choice and champion the violator’s “courage” for stepping out into some new aberrant lifestyle. Otherwise one is evil and not truly “righteous.”

If you are caught in the act of this “judgmental” unrighteousness, your rights and opinions are decried, ridiculed and publicly slandered. In many cases you could lose your job or even your property. Tolerance is demanded for everyone BUT those who hold fast to and verbalized their Judaeo-Christian beliefs and/or conservative values. These individuals forfeit the respect of society. They may not speak of their beliefs because they are offensive. Anyone else’s beliefs cannot be offensive.

There you have it… You are welcome to like or share this, but be aware that doing so could categorize you as an “ist” or a “phobe.” :)

Surviving With a Toppled Pyramid

In 2009 I set out on a quest to Light the World — to help as many people as I could find ultimate freedom by living their lives in alignment with God’s love and light. It became evident that this was a much bigger job than I could ever possibly do alone. There were other people out there being prepared to light the way for others — to shine in the darkness of this world and lead people to the love of God.

All I knew was that I was supposed to “help the Light Bearers.” I thought they needed help getting their messages out, so that’s the direction I traveled. In recent months I’ve wondered if that isn’t what they need at all. Or at least not first.

I’ve noticed that a lot of “Light Bearers” were hesitant to put themselves out there. A slew of self doubts, overwhelm, lack of knowledge, and day-to-day challenges kept them playing small. What’s more, while they might feel like they had something to share with the world, they usually weren’t sure what it would be or how they would say it.

At that point in my life, I was doing well with my business and all of my basic needs were easily met. I couldn’t see why they were making everything so hard.

Then in 2012, my world began to unravel. I lost my multi-six-figure business literally overnight. Downsizing to a lifestyle of 1/5th of what you were earning isn’t something a person can do overnight. Commitments you make at a higher level of income don’t suddenly go away just because your income does.

Financial strain accentuated the problems that had long existed at home, and in 2013, my 28-year-marriage dissolved as well. While I scrambled to create revenue streams that would serve my “Light Bearer” market, I hit barrier after barrier. The economic crisis which hit America was now affecting me. I encountered the same challenges other Light Bearers faced.

  • Tight finances
  • Dwindling confidence. What I used to do wasn’t working anymore. I’d lost my “Midas Touch.”
  • I was alone and felt as if the foundation to my world had been ripped out from under me.
  • My core sense of “belonging” took a direct hit. It felt like I no longer belonged to anyone nor did I even belong in the swiftly changing online business world.
  • The ability to keep my property became increasingly questionable.

The more my foundation crumbled, the more I didn’t care a thing about “Lighting the World.” I was doing well to keep the lights on in my own house!

Over the last year or so, I’ve been constantly reminded of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Notice that “Self Actualization” is at the top of the pyramid. We can’t even begin to think about helping others until we have our own core needs met.

How is a person supposed to be creative and problem solve when their core needs are not being met or are seriously threatened? Most of the time I felt as if I’d been slammed to the ground, my face ground into the dust, a boot in my back, and my arms tied behind my back while someone screamed, “Create, Marnie! Create!”  How do you create (self actualize) when your basic survival is threatened?

As I’ve looked at this diagram recently, I’m realizing that my entire pyramid got swept off. Everything was gone but breathing, food, water, shelter. I still had my health, good friends and family members, but for the most part, my slate was wiped clean.

As I’ve pondered on why that was necessary, I think perhaps it’s because my entire foundation was faulty. Much of it was built on dysfunction and haphazard construction.

  • If I’m here to help people communicate their messages to the world, how could I do that if my core relationship was built on miscommunication?
  • If I’m here to be a spiritual messenger with divine healing and inspiration to bring illumination to the masses, how can I do that if my own emotions and relationships need healing?
  • How could I be a conduit of God’s love and light if there were “black blobs” on my own personal glowing ball of light?

Perhaps the only way to become who I needed to become next was to topple my pyramid and start over.

Honestly, I’m still rebuilding. But, it’s left me curious, about something else. Did I need to go through this so that I could relate to other Light Bearers? I certainly understand now why some people might not be so excited about leaving a legacy or lighting the world, even when they have something important to share.

If a person is in survival mode, maybe they just aren’t ready. I’d love to hear your thoughts… What do you think Light Bearers need most? How can I help?

Here’s an affirmation audio I created for myself to tap back into being a conduit of God’s love and light. Maybe you’ll find it helpful too.
