Online Marketing Strategy: Got Your Cart Before The Horse?

online marketing strategyWhat do all these questions have in common?

  • If I start a business, how will I market it?
  • If I write a book, who will publish it?
  • If I win the lottery, how will I protect my winnings?

They’ve all got the cart before the horse! You don’t need to spend money and effort on marketing until you have something to sell. You don’t need a publisher until you’ve written the book, and you don’t need to worry about what to do with those lottery winnings until you’ve won.

Yes, it pays to give thought to these things. It is smart to decide if there is a market for what you intend to sell, but I see most people letting these questions immobilize them.

In working with start-up entrepreneurs, I’ve noticed many of them obsess over marketing and how they will get customers before they are ready to do so. They are so stumped by how they’ll get customers, that many never get started.

Others get in such a big hurry to acquire customers that they don’t prepare to receive them. I’ve been in online marketing and advertising since 1994, and the biggest mistake I see people make is paying for advertising and marketing without having a clear way for people to get on their lists or purchase from them. I actually turn down Facebook ad management clients if they do not have those things in place.

Imagine a store running advertisements when they have no products on the shelves. Seems silly, but people do it all the time online. I can’t tell you how many people who consider themselves coaches and consultants and they have no email follow up system and no buy buttons on their web sites.

As one of my colleagues, Laura West said,

I see a lot of people falling in love with marketing strategies without having a product, program, membership or a list. I’ve heard stories of people being on huge shows like Dr. Phil or Oprah as an expert…and no mechanisms in place to capture people on their list. Wasted opportunity!”

Online Marketing Strategy

Here are the steps in the right order:

  1. Research the market you’d like to serve. Is the market big enough for what you intend to offer? Are they reachable? Do you know what their most pressing problems are? Do you know what they need and what they’re willing to pay for?
  2. Acquire or create products and services that serve that market and meet their most pressing needs.
  3. Create the systems (web site/ecommerce, product funnel, marketing funnel) that guide people through purchasing your products and services.
  4. Do the actual marketing and advertising to drive people to your marketing funnel.

Create Information Products: Leverage Your Wisdom-Serve More People

  • Are you ready to stop trading hours for dollars?
  • Would you like to create more revenue streams without taking personal time away from your family?
  • Would you like to reach more people with your work and your message?
  • Would you like to help more people with what you do best?

Information products and online training programs are a great way to do all of these. Downloadable information products can bring much needed cashflow into your business while you sleep or vacation.

Busting A Couple Myths About Information Product Creation

Myth 1: Most people assume creating an information product or program has to take a long time. It doesn’t. Not if you have a system for creating it.

Myth 2: A lot of people also assume an information product wouldn’t fit well with their business. Even businesses built around physical products (like essential oils, clothing, makeup, extermination services) can all benefit from information products.

Myth 3: Many feel like they aren’t an expert in anything and that no one would pay for an information product they would create. You’d be surprised at what people will pay to learn.

In my Free Training Series, “Is There An Information Product In You?” I share ideas for determining if creating an information product is a good route for you. (You can get this free tutorial using the signup form on this page.)

If you’re not sure if you are ready to create an information product, here are a few questions to help you determine if you’re ready to leverage your knowledge or life lessons into programs and products.

Consider These Questions

create information products1) “I help people solve what problem?” What problem do people struggle with that you can solve? You may help people solve multiple problems, but could you pick one?

2) “Who do I help?” Describe this person in as much detail as you can.

3) “I help them by teaching them what?” Could you break it down into three steps or points?

4) “And here are the results they get…” What kind of results do people get from working with you?

5) Name 1-3 people you have helped who have received positive results from working with you.

If you can answer those questions, you’re ready for my system of creating products in a week or less.

If you can’t answer those questions, here’s a little homework you can do to get ready to leverage your influence through my duplicatable product creation system.

1) Start a Focus Group – think of 2-5 people who fit the audience you’d like to work with.

2) Take Your Focus Group through the Process – Invite the list of people to participate in your training. You might put them in a group and help them together in 1-3 phone calls. If you’d rather, you can work with them one-on-one. It doesn’t have to be as a group format. Offer participants your training in exchange for them giving you feedback and testimonials (assuming they benefit from working with you).

3) Give participants an assessment before you work with them. This is as simple as several questions asking them to rate themselves on a scale of 1-5 in different areas that relate to the problem you intend to solve.

4) Give participants the same assessment again at the end of the training to see how they improved.

5) Document the process. Record your calls. Hang onto any handouts or items you create for them.

6) Ask for testimonials.

Now you have a process. You know whether it works and you hopefully have some glowing testimonials you can use.

Once you’ve done this (or something similar to it), you’re ready to offer training programs that can be resold as a product. To learn more about my free tutorial on preparing to create information products, go here.

Valuing What You Have to Offer the World

I have noticed that people with something important to share often do not value their own story or their message. They may feel as if there’s nothing new in what they’ve been through or they may not see that other people would care to hear what they have to say.

These can be core beliefs developed over a lifetime. Many individuals believe things like: “I’m not good enough” or “I don’t matter” or “I don’t have anything valuable to contribute.”

It’s amazing what happens when I show people how to systematically share what they know in a book or information productIt builds confidence and opens their eyes to what they have to offer.  Add in a little belief-shifting work to help them align their thoughts and beliefs about how valuable they are as a person, and things really shift.

As individuals come to value themselves, others value them and their work as well. As a person articulates and shares his or her message, he or she becomes the confident, transformational leader they are here to be and leaves a legacy of hope in the world.

And bottom line… that’s what we need in this world … more hope, more light, more inner peace and love toward ourselves and others.

deciding which product to create

Making Choices: Selecting an Idea to Pursue

  • Do you have trouble making choices about which idea to pursue?
  • Do you find yourself perpetually taking trainings and learning new things, but never really implementing?
  • Do you have so many ideas it feels impossible to choose one direction and follow it?
  • Do you feel like there’s so much more to learn, you aren’t “ready” to actually run with any one business idea?

If so, I want you to know you’re not alone. There are lots of people like you who are ever learning but have trouble implementing. A lot of it has to do with your core connecting style, which I’d guess is probably one who sees lots of POTENTIAL. Folks like this (and I’m one of them) have a hard time choosing one thing because we feel like we’re sacrificing all the other choices.

People who operate from a POTENTIAL core also feel they never know enough because there is always more to learn. This creates a perfectionism that can cause you to stay in endless prep mode.

making choicesHalf the battle is realizing that this is the nature of your personality type and to FORCE yourself to choose a path. Often the path you choose is not as important as that you choose SOMETHING.

I know it seems like a leap, but if you zone in on one focus, and avoid the tendency to veer off into something else, you’ll start to see real progress.

I will warn you that when you do choose one path, you will most likely panic at first because you will feel the need to MOURN the other paths you’re not choosing. That’s okay. Just acknowledge that feeling for what it is and move on with your focus.

Making Choices Doesn’t Have to Be Difficult

If you’re having trouble picking an idea to pursue, I invite you to watch this video tutorial. In it, I share a formula for evaluating your ideas in a clear, definitive way so you can make choices quickly and start making money from them.

Spotlight: New Rules for Clutter

Interior designer, Susan Boelman, attended one of my recent How to Create Virtual Products and Programs Intensives and created her “New Rules for Clutter 2015: Make Room for Success” training. Susan speaks locally on the subject of clutter and then leads her attendees into her virtual class.

Susan used the section of my training about creating preview presentations to tweak her live speeches. She then used the ready-made templates to simplify the process of automating the purchasing process for her students.

Here’s what Susan shared with me last Friday:

“Just had my first paid student that I do not know … Go to my online sales page (LeadPages & WordPress), hit the buy button (PayPal), get a receipt email, sent to my thank you/sign-up page for ‘student updates’ (LeadPages & WordPress), and put into a subscriber list (AWeber) on automatic for student updates. This is huge for me since 4 weeks ago I didn’t have any of this really set-up. Cannot wait to get more things set-up automatically. Now to get the sequence for my mini video campaign finished all the way through … It’s 90% done.”

susanboelmanflyer1At her live speeches, Susan gives away this flier which sends people to her web site to sign up for her virtual class. Currently the flier leads them to a shorter sales page, but Susan is working on a longer one as well.

I love how Susan is running with the process and not waiting for everything to be perfect to start making sales. She’s using the preview presentation templates in my program to create a video series as well. Today she wrote me to say,

I am shooting my videos this afternoon with the help of my accountability partner. And tonight writing the longer sales page that you gave us the wording for. I might be putting together the marketing/sales funnel a little backwards, but I had two people ready to buy after my last LIVE luncheon presentation and needed something quickly.”  Receive Susan’s videos here.

susan boelman networking event flyerSusan went a step further and created an additional flyer that she uses at networking events.

I love watching how my students use the templates and training I provide, make it their own and use it in various venues.

Congratulations, Susan! And here’s to your ongoing success!

5 Things Entrepreneurial Light Bearers Need

Have you ever felt like God told you to do something? You set out to do it and you hit one obstacle after another. And you’re wondering, “What in the world is He thinking?” Or perhaps you begin to doubt you heard right. Maybe my story will be of some comfort to you…

In 2009, while enjoying some spiritual time, I heard these words in my mind, “Help the Light Bearers. The world can’t see Me, but it can see them.”

I wasn’t exactly sure how I was supposed to help the Light Bearers, but what was coming to me at the time was an understanding of who Light Bearers are, and the process we go through to become an instrument in God’s hands.

The first solid thing that came for me was a book — a roadmap to help Light Bearers understand who they are, what’s happening to them, and what they’re here to do — Light the World, How Your Brilliance Can Shift the Planet.

In the fall of 2012, I guess God wanted me to “get down to business” with His instruction because that’s when the internet completely shifted. My bread-winning site became obsolete, and I chose to make my “Light Bearer passion” the central focus of business.

I immediately went to work trying to assist Light Bearers. A funny thing happened… which really wasn’t so funny to me… I hit one obstacle after another. What I used to know and how I used to do things were not working.

I felt like I dove off a cliff expecting to fly. Only I didn’t fly. I plummeted like a stone. I had no system. No clarity. I had a roadmap of the Light Bearer process, but that wasn’t a system. It wasn’t a clear deliverable that I could build a business around. And believe me, I tried.

extraordinarydestinyI think Light Bearers do this a lot. We have this ethereal “aha” or insight and think that’s enough to build a business around. It’s a wonderful thing, but it’s not solid. People need something practical if they’re going to invest their time, energy and money to work with you or learn from you.

I knew I didn’t have a clear system. But I knew, somehow, someway, I had to get one! To begin with, I wasn’t sure what system the Light Bearers needed. Over the course of two years, I did quite a bit of private consulting with Light Bearers and created a lot of products and programs. To me (and for those who follow me) it probably looked like I was jumping from one thing to another — everything from creating your own amazing life, to your amazing body, to breaking through to radiance, to book consulting and now product development.

Maybe you’re looking at me wondering, “What in the world do these things have in common?” The funny thing about the way God leads (at least the way He leads me) is it’s rarely linear. And He rarely says, “Ok, here’s the big picture of what we’re going to build.” Only after the fact do you step back and say, “Oh, NOW I get what we were building!”

I’m at one of those vistas now. Finally, I can say, “I have my systems in place! Yay!” And the pieces fit together. So I’ll share what I’ve discovered from talking to, consulting with, and training Light Bearers over the last two years. Hopefully, in iterating it to you, both you and I will gain some added clarity about the method to God’s madness. 🙂

There are 5 things an Entrepreneurial Light Bearer Needs:

1) Clarity about who you are and what you’re here to do.

2) A clearly defined, tangible, duplicatable system that is conveyed in programs, products, books, training, etc.

3) Enough energy and stamina to live out your mission. Your body’s got to be healthy enough keep up with the vision!

4) Get out of God’s way and let Him work through you. Meaning, release the limiting beliefs, fears, and past trauma so you can move forward and fulfill your life’s work.

5) Get the word out about what you have to offer — in a word, “Marketing”

I hope you’ll join me for one of my upcoming trainings. I’m excited to help you shine as brightly as possible and deliver your brilliance to those who so desperately need it!
